
Equity emerged overall winners of the 35th edition of the interbank games in the year the bank is celebrating 35 years since it began operation in 1984.
Equity Bank emerged victorious at the 2019 Kenya Institute of Bankers, KIB Interbank Games amassing 1,076 points to be crowned overall winners of the annual games, 4 points ahead of Central Bank of Kenya with 1,072 points.
Barclays Bank was third at a distant 67 points behind Equity with 1009 points. Equity claimed claiming 20 podium place finishes at the games that were held at the Kenya School of Monetary Studies in Nairobi as well as other locations in the city. The team finished in first position in 9 disciplines (football- men & women, basketball-men & women, table tennis- women, chess, handball women and Senior management run- women and men run). Equity also clinched seven 1st runners up positions and four 2nd runners up positions in various disciplines.
Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Culture and Heritage Amb. (Dr) Amina Mohammed who graced the event lauded the participants and winners “What I have seen today is truly amazing. Sports is about discipline and team work which you have demonstrated today and some of you are talented enough to be eligible for the national teams,” she sad.
Central Bank Governor Patrick Njoroge lauded the teams for the Olympic spirit saying, “I am proud of the staff of every bank that participated in the events and what you have been able to achieve” he added.
During a celebration dinner hosted for the Equity team at the Safari Park Hotel, Equity Bank Kenya Managing Director Gerald Warui who also participated in the games said the victory is timely gift to the bank as it celebrates 35 years anniversary. “The No.1 one trophy belongs to us now and the biggest challenge is now retaining it,” he Gerald.
Equity Bank Chief Officer, Human Capital & Administration Reuben Mbindu urged the teams to maintain that winning spirit as they return to their work stations. “Equity needs to remain the leading bank in all aspects of the banking sector but also in sports,” he added
